20 Gauge Shot Shells

The 20 gauge shotgun is a type of smoothbore or rifled shotgun shell that is smaller in caliber (.615) than a 12 gauge (.729). It is often used as a beginning shooter's practice round and is great for small upland game, plus is noted by its yellow hull.

The caliber of a shotgun is measured in terms of gauge (U.S.) or bore (U.K.). The gauge number is determined by the weight, in fractions of a pound, of a solid sphere of lead with a diameter equal to the inside diameter of the barrel (ie. the bore). So, a 20 gauge shotgun nominally should have an inside diameter equal to that of a sphere made from one-twentieth of a pound of lead. By far the most common gauges are 12 and 20.  Historically, the shotgun gauge is how many lead balls the diameter of the barrel bore equals 1 US Pound.

The shot or pellets in the shotshell for the most part are made of lead being partially replaced recently by alloys of bismuth, steel, tungsten-iron, tungsten-nickel-iron, tungsten polymer and others.  Non-toxic loads are required by Federal law for waterfowl hunting in the US. Always check local, STATE and FEDERAL regulations before hunting, especially for waterfowl.

It takes 20 lead balls of the diameter of a 20-gauge shotgun bore to equal one US pound, while it only takes 12 lead balls of the diameter of a 12-gauge shotgun bore to equal the same amount. A 20-gauge shotgun is sometimes considered more suitable for hunting upland game birds and small furbearers.

The 20-gauge shot shell is the only shell with a mandated color: YELLOW. This to make 12 and 20-gauge shells easily distinguishable and to reduce the risk of damaging the firearm or unintentionally harming yourself or another individual. This is because a 20-gauge shot shell will typically fit into the barrel of a 12-gauge allowing a 12-gauge to be chambered behind an unintentionally chambered 20-gauge shot shell leading to a barrel obstruction condition.

The 20-gauge is commonly used for hunting squirrels, rabbits, upland birds and waterfowl. With slugs it may be even be used for deer or medium game. In addition to this, many sport shooters will participate with the 20-gauge at sporting events such as skeet and trap tournaments.
